PIA-NCR hosts Rainbow Care Caravan for elderly LGBTQ+ community

MANILA, (PIA) — The Philippine Information Agency – National Capital Region (PIA-NCR) is set to hold the first Rainbow Care Caravan: Ang Araw na Itech ay Para Sayis (This Day is for You), a special event dedicated to the well-being of elderly members of the LGBTQ+ community, in line with the celebration of Pride Month.

The event, scheduled for June 20, 2024, at Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila, aims to provide medical assistance, foster community connections, raise awareness about the challenges faced by this demographic, and promote social inclusion.

“This initiative highlights the importance of ensuring healthcare accessibility and social support for our LGBTQ+ elders,” explained PIA-NCR Regional Director Emver P. Cortez.

Focus on health and community

PIA-NCR Information Officer and Project Manager Jumalynne V. Doctolero said the Rainbow Care Caravan will offer free medical consultations, health check-ups, and enrollment assistance in PhilHealth’s Konsulta program.

The event also aims to connect Golden Bekis, an organization for gay men aged 55 and above, with Golden Gays, another LGBTQ+ group, to strengthen their network and share resources, Doctolero added.

Raising awareness and building bridges

Organizers and partners–which include the Intramuros Administration, PhilHealth, Bureau of Communications Services, Department of Health Metro Manila Center for Health Development, National Capital Region Police Office, Manila City Government, Philippine National AIDS Council, National Commission of Senior Citizens, Globe, Lalamove Philippines, Yamang Bukid, Golden Bekis, and Golden Gays–hope the event will raise public awareness about the specific needs of aging LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in terms of healthcare and social inclusion.

The program includes a keynote and short message of support from prominent figures like Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna-Pangan and PhilHealth Vice President Bernadette C. Lico.

Festivities and support services

The event is expected to run for the day and will be open to the public starting at 9:00 a.m. (PIA-NCR)
