Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has filed a resolution in the Senate that seeks to honor the late movie icon Gloria Anne Galla, better known as Gloria Romero among Filipinos, to highlight her significant role in enriching Philippine cinema and culture.
Gloria Romero passed away on January 25, 2025 at the age of 91. Estrada said the entire Filipino nation, “mourns the loss of a cinematic legend whose legacy will continue to inspire (Pinoys) for generations to come.”
“Known for her remarkable beauty, sophisticated personality and acting prowess on TV and films, Romero thrived in her illustrious career as a respected woman and actress through the years,” Estrada noted in Senate Resolution No. 1290 he filed.
Estrada, also a movie actor, said Romero has also been known as the “First Lady of Philippine Cinema” for starring as on-screen partner of major actors of her time, including his father, former president Joseph Estrada.
Records show Romero starred in over 250 films and TV shows. Her breakthrough role in the 1954 romantic comedy film “Dalagang Ilocana” earned her the first FAMAS Best Actress Award at just 21 years old.
A copy of the Senate resolution will be presented to Romero’s family as a gesture of the chamber’s admiration for her contributions to Philippine arts and culture.
