Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte will lead the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 25 at 8:00 a.m.
The event will take place at the EDSA People Power Monument, located at the corner of EDSA and White Plains.

Mayor Belmonte will be joined by Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Chairperson of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and Carmelo Victor A. Crisanto, Executive Director of the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC).
Representatives from various non-government organizations, including Spirit of EDSA, Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation, Inc., August 21 Movement, Chino Roces Foundation, Project Gunita PH, and Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library, will also participate in the ceremonies.
The anniversary marks the historic day in 1986 when then-President Corazon C. Aquino signed Proclamation No. 1, declaring, “Sovereignty resides in the People and all government authority emanates from them.”
This proclamation coincided with Aquino’s oath of office before Supreme Court Associate Justice Claudio Teehankee, following the successful people power revolution that led to the transfer of power to a newly elected government.
The largely bloodless transition was made possible by the thousands of Filipinos from diverse backgrounds who gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue and in other major cities, united in their belief that change was necessary.
Their courageous stand in the face of potential violence was pivotal in ending the regime of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., ushering in a new era of freedom for the nation.
The NHCP is responsible for promoting Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, as well as preserving historical heritage by conserving and marking historic sites and structures. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
