ST. PAUL โ Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving his 27-year and three-month prison sentence for his role in the attempted coup dโetat in 2022.
The 70-year-old conservative leader is being held at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasรญlia โ the countryโs equivalent of a central police headquarters โ where he was recently taken into custody after allegedly attempting to evade house arrest.
The sentence was finalized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after Brazilโs Supreme Federal Court (STF) declared Bolsonaroโs conviction โfinal.โ
Bolsonaro was sentenced alongside several others identified as part of the โfirst nucleusโ of individuals behind the plot aimed at preventing President-elect Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva from assuming office despite winning the October 2022 elections. (Agenzia Nova)
