Butuan City – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Office of the Undersecretary for Regional Operations led by Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang once again expressed its unwavering dedication to strengthen the food safety measures and regulatory system in the country, today at the 1st Caraga Food Safety Summit.
This year’s celebration was steered by DOST Caraga headed by Regional Director Noel M. Ajoc that centers on the theme, “Advancement in Food Safety Management for a Food Safe Caraga.”
The said summit will highlight activities on the advancement of the Regional Food Safety Policy in Caraga including plenary sessions on current food safety topics, consultancy services, and S&T workshops.
Exhibits featuring the novel and innovative technologies developed by both Research and Development Institutions (RDIs) and the Private Sector, addressing various food safety and hygiene concerns will also be part of the event.
Moreover, the Food Innovation Center (FIC) of Caraga State University will present their innovative functional food products created using indigenous raw materials.
The Food Safety summit was designed to capacitate MSMEs, SETUP Clients, SUCs, LGUs and DOST RO Food Safety Teams from the Mindanao Cluster on the emerging global food safety trends and practices in safeguarding the health of individual consumers.
“As a member of the Food Safety Regulation Coordinating Board, DOST, the Caraga Food Safety Team, has implemented various food safety projects, including consultancy services and training. These interventions aim to strengthen the implementation of RA 10611 or the ( Food safety act of 2013) and ensure the effective execution of the Regional Food Safety Policy.” Usec. Mabborang emphasized this in his message.
For many years now, the DOST continuously implements food safety related research and development as guided by the DOST Food Safety roadmap. This roadmap focuses on Research and Development on Food Safety, S&T Services on Food Safety, Human Resource Development on Food Safety, and Knowledge and Technology Transfer and Policy Advocacy on Food safety. Many initiatives were already utilized for a number of completed projects and there are even more in the pipeline as a result of intensifying the advocacy of ensuring food safety through STI.
DOST Regional Offices has also been an active implementer and collaborator on the implementation of various Council funded and monitored food safety related projects including the capacity development training for stakeholders, food safety related testing and consultancy services and preparation to secure food safety regulatory requirements.
