NAUJAN, Oriental Mindoro —
In an effort to support persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) reintegration into society, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Naujan District Jail has launched a new barbering course, BJMP MIMAROPA regional information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo reported Tuesday, Feb. 25.
In a statement, Anglo said that the initiative, which comes in response to high demand from the PDLs, aims to equip them with practical skills they can use to build a better future after release.
“This is part of a broader effort by the BJMP to offer courses that align with PDL’s interests. By participating in these programs, they can learn valuable skills that will improve their chances of finding meaningful work after they leave the jail facility,” said Anglo.
A total of 20 PDLs are currently enrolled in the program, allowing them to further develop their skills and gain hands-on experience.
One of them is Anthony (not his real name) is working to become a licensed barber, a career at his fingertips. “I have never had an opportunity like this to set my mind focused on whenever I am released to be career-minded,” he said.
Meanwhile, acting district jail warden Jail Senior Inspector Herman Jose Madrigal emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to provide jail residents with the skills they need to thrive in society.
He said, the next step is to give PDLs extended courses and make the barbering tools available in the facility, so the former client can get a job upon release.
